Success Stories - Firehouse Center for the Arts
This historic building built as a market house and lyceum by the citizens of Newburyport in 1823 served as the Central Fire Station from the mid 1800s until 1980. A cooperative effort by the public and private sectors has restored the structure as a center for the arts and public events so that it will continue to serve the community for generations to come.
After its reopening in 1991, the The Firehouse Center and Schwartz/Silver Architects, Inc. won an “Honor Award For Architecture” from The American Institute of Architects. The Firehouse is managed by the Society for the Development of Arts and Humanities of Greater Newburyport (SDAH) as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
